FAQs
  • What should I expect when making an appointment with Pickleball Health Rx?
In the case of an injury, the first appointment would be with Dr. Drew Stein for the diagnosis and assessment of the injury. This will include a patient history report, thorough physical exam and imaging if needed. Once a diagnosis is established, physical therapy will begin thereafter. The in-house relationship between orthopedics and rehabilitation creates the most effective recovery after injury. In the case of prevention of injury, the first appointment will be made with physical therapy. This appointment will include an extensive history report and assessment of movement patterns associated with common Pickleball movements.
  • What should I expect from Orthopedics and Sports Medicine?
When making an appointment with Dr. Drew Stein, you can expect a detailed history related to your suspected injury or concern. Diagnosis will include an in-house Ultrasound Assessment or X-ray imaging when needed. If an injury cannot be fully diagnosed with these imaging techniques, then a referral for a CT scan, MRI, etc. will be given. Once a diagnosis is established, treatment could possibly begin right away in the form of medication, injection, referral for physical therapy or consultation about surgery. Note, surgery is the last possible choice as practice preference is to fully exhaust all conservative treatment options first.
  • What to expect with Physical Therapy?
Physical Therapy, when needed, will include a detailed patient history followed by one-on-one treatment to include soft tissue techniques and exercises specific to the injury. Before treatment, coordination between Dr. Drew Stein and the Physical Therapist will be made for a more effective and efficient treatment session. During an office session, the appropriate treatment protocol will be applied and a detailed home exercise program will likely be established for the patient to enhance treatment protocols. With a priority of getting you back on the court, a focus on exercises that enhance balance, stability and proprioception will aid in rebuilding strength around the injured area while minimizing the risk of re-injury.
  • What are some common pickleball injuries?
    1. Pickleball Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): Repetitive strain injury that can occur due to the repeated swinging of the paddle. It causes pain and tenderness on the outer part of the elbow. 2. Shoulder Injuries: Overhead shots and serves can strain the shoulder joint, leading to conditions such as rotator cuff injuries, impingement, or bursitis. 3. Achilles Tendonitis: Repetitive jumping or quick movements can lead to inflammation of the Achilles tendon, causing pain and discomfort. Improper footwear can also play a role. 4. Knee Injuries: Quick lateral movements and pivoting can put stress on the knee joints, potentially leading to injuries such as ligament sprains or meniscus tears. 5. Groin Strains: Quick lateral movements can strain the muscles in the groin area, leading to discomfort or strains. 6. Hamstring Strains: Sprinting and sudden movements can cause hamstring strains, which are common in sports such as pickleball involving those quick changes in direction. 7. Sprains and Strains: Twisting, turning and sudden movements can lead to sprains (ligament injuries) and strains (muscle or tendon injuries), especially in the ankles, wrists and knees. 8. Ankle Injuries: Rapid direction changes, stops and starts increase the risk of rolling an ankle or suffering a sprain.
